Summary: Haemans by Nicoline Evans is a tale of lost love, lost souls, and the power of addiction. The story follows several characters, and shows the different ways this certain bloody (literally) and drug filled life influences them. One is truly evil, one is trying to forget the past, and one just wants to get the love of his life to feel for him again. The latter is Sevrick, who wishes to get the woman he adores, Arinadya, back from the brink of disaster. However, Arinadya, or Rina to Sevrick, is not interested in going back to her old human life. She has power now and revels in it. Only when she sees Sevrick, do certain human feelings come back to her, except she is too caught up in the Haeman lifestyle to change. Her story progresses to the point where she meets a Prince. However, this Prince is not a knight in shining armor that will awaken her with a kiss, but one that sends Rina spiraling down into an even more devastating nightmare.
Review: Set in Russia, the story is full of vivid imagery and suspense. It was, in a word, lovely. Nicoline Evans paints a picture that you soon won’t forget, and is as dark as it is magical, and tragically beautiful. A true twist on the Romeo and Juliet storyline, with just a wonderfully gruesome Grimms fairytale feel. Haemans is beautifully written, and gives the reader an eerie sense of a world in ruin.
I enjoyed it all. Although, I must admit that I did enjoy Arinadya’s storyline a little more than the rest. The depth of Rina’s degenerate character is truly masterful. And I have to say that I’m so happy I bought the second one, because I can’t wait to see what Ms. Evans has in store for her readers next!
So, it’s 5 out of 5 stars for this dark and creepy look into a world filled with drugs, sex, and murder.
